NordVPN Review 2026: Real Price After Renewal, Speed, Privacy and Who It Suits

02Who is behind NordVPN

NordVPN started in 2012 as a configuration for Windows and released its own app a year later. It is run by Nord Security, founded by Tomas Okmanas, Eimantas Sabaliauskas and Jonas Karklys. In 2022, the group raised its first outside funding at a $1.6 billion valuation (Nord Security), and it says it now protects more than 20 million users (Nord Security).

The corporate structure is more complicated than one brand name suggests. The App Store lists Panama-based Nordvpn S.A. as the seller (App Store), the parent company Nord Security is based in the Netherlands (help center), and security audits are commissioned by UAB 360 IT, a Lithuanian company in the same group (Cure53). NordVPN cites Panama as the reason it does not have to keep user logs: there is no mandatory data retention law there.

03How much NordVPN costs

NordVPN sells three plans: Basic, Complete and Ultra. The pricing page shows euro prices before tax with the note “VAT may apply” (NordVPN). In the EU, VAT is added at checkout based on the country you choose (help center). When we opened the checkout from the Czech Republic, 21% Czech VAT was added and the two-year Basic plan went from €94.23 to €114.02. In the US, the plans cost the same numbers in dollars, before sales tax (VPNAlert).

Shorter plans only make sense for a trial run. One year of Basic costs €65.88 and the monthly plan €14.99 a month, both before VAT. The two-year plan works out 77% cheaper than paying month by month. NordVPN’s own “Save 69%” label compares the intro price with the renewal price instead.

Watch the renewal. After the first 27 months, the subscription renews automatically for one year at the full price: €139.08 for Basic, instead of the roughly €41.88 a year that the intro price works out to (help center). Over 39 months (the intro term plus one renewal), Basic costs €233.31 before VAT; over 63 months, €511.47. You can turn off auto-renewal at any time under Billing in your Nord Account (help center). When the plan runs out, you can buy a new one at whatever the current offer is.

A dedicated IP address costs extra: €3.69 a month before VAT with the two-year plan. Students and apprentices aged 18 to 26 get an additional discount (help center). At checkout we saw card and Apple Pay; the help center also lists PayPal and cryptocurrency, but says availability depends on the region (help center).

The App Store does not sell the 27-month plan, so the cheapest deal is only on the website. Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not NordVPN.

04Money-back guarantee, free trial and canceling

You can ask NordVPN for a full refund within 30 days of your first purchase. You request it through live chat, the request is processed within a few hours, and the money reaches your account within 10 business days. The guarantee does not cover renewals unless local law requires otherwise (help center). Google Play purchases are refunded by NordVPN support, App Store purchases only by Apple.

The 7-day free trial is limited to 15 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany and Poland, and only applies to the top-tier plan. New Android users can also get a 3-day trial through Google Play (help center). Everywhere else, the 30-day guarantee works as the trial.

In the EU you also have a 14-day right to withdraw from contracts made online; in the Czech Republic, for example, it is set out in section 1829 of the Civil Code. If you asked the service to start straight away, though, you may have to pay for the time you used (Czech Civil Code). NordVPN’s own guarantee is the better deal, because it refunds the full amount.

In the US, NordVPN has faced several class actions since 2024 over its automatic renewals. In May 2026, the parties told at least two courts they had reached a settlement in principle, and most of the cases have been stayed (CourtListener, TINA.org). The terms are not public yet. The cases concern US customers, but they are a reminder to keep an eye on your renewal date.

05What you get with Basic, Complete and Ultra

Basic is enough for most people. It includes the full VPN with all its features plus DNS-level scam and phishing protection, which on phones works even with the VPN switched off (help center). Complete makes sense if you already pay for a password manager and cloud storage: you get both for an extra €1 a month. After renewal, though, the gap between Basic and Complete grows to €80.40 a year before VAT.

Full malware protection, which also scans downloaded files, only works on Windows and in the Mac app downloaded from NordVPN’s website. On iPhone, Android and Linux you only get the DNS-level protection that Basic includes (help center). 06Server network

NordVPN advertises “225+ locations” on its website and “8,400+ servers in 167+ countries” in its help center. The public server list that its apps use showed different numbers on October 13, 2026: 7,130 servers in 150 countries and 225 cities (NordVPN API). Physical servers are located in only 55 of those countries. The other 95 are virtual locations: you get an IP address from that country, but the server sits elsewhere. Even Panama, where NordVPN is based, is a virtual location.

Across the network there are 143 Double VPN servers, 97 obfuscated servers and 5 Onion Over VPN servers. In Central Europe the network thins out: 38 servers in Prague and 15 in Bratislava, compared with 327 in Germany. Russia and China have no servers at all.

07Speed

NordVPN is fast, but it does not clearly lead any editorial speed test. In TechRadar’s table, it reached 1,249 Mbps with NordLynx and came seventh, ahead of ExpressVPN and Surfshark (TechRadar). In a newer round published in its review updated in October 2026, TechRadar measured 1,427 Mbps locally and 939 Mbps from the US to the UK (TechRadar). Tom’s Guide recorded 1,213 Mbps in the morning and 1,284 Mbps in the evening in March 2026 (Tom’s Guide).

On an everyday home connection, what matters more is how much speed the VPN takes away. Across more than 250 tests, CNET found an average loss of just 2.9% (CNET); Security.org measured about 4% (Security.org). With OpenVPN, NordVPN is roughly half as fast (TechRadar), and in Security.org’s tests Double VPN cut speeds by 80% on average.

The tests NordVPN cites itself

NordVPN markets itself as the fastest VPN and points to tests by Artifact Security (June 2026) and West Coast Labs (2025). A footnote admits the claim is also supported by articles published through paid partnerships (NordVPN). In Artifact Security’s test, NordVPN scored 91 points and the only Platinum award, ahead of ExpressVPN on 84 and Proton VPN on 83. The report does not say who commissioned it (Artifact Security). In West Coast Labs’ 2025 comparison, it scored 58 out of 60 points, according to TechRadar (TechRadar). An older AV-TEST report from 2020 states on its title page that NordVPN commissioned it (AV-TEST).

Commissioned tests are not necessarily wrong, but they are worth taking with a pinch of salt. We give more weight to editorial testing. It agrees that NordVPN is fast, but not that it is the fastest: in TechRadar’s table it came seventh, and its own results changed noticeably between test rounds.

08Security and privacy

The default protocol is NordLynx, built on WireGuard. You can also choose OpenVPN with AES-256-GCM encryption, IKEv2/IPsec and NordWhisper, NordVPN’s own protocol that disguises VPN traffic as regular web traffic (help center, help center). Post-quantum encryption, designed to protect data against future quantum computers, can be switched on in all the main apps. It only works with NordLynx and cannot be combined with a dedicated IP, obfuscated servers or Meshnet (help center).

NordVPN offers a kill switch on every platform except Fire TV. On Windows you can choose whether it cuts off the whole device or only selected apps; on iPhone and in the Mac App Store version, the feature is called VPN bypass prevention (help center).

No-logs policy and audits

NordVPN says it does not record what you browse, when you connect or your personal data while you use the service (help center). It keeps only your encrypted login details, email and payment information for refunds (help center). It has had this claim assessed six times since 2018, with Deloitte’s Lithuanian office handling the fifth and sixth (Nord Security). In the sixth assessment, auditors had access to standard servers as well as Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers between November 10 and December 12, 2025 (Tom’s Guide). Each assessment checks a specific period, though, not the service forever.

Berlin-based Cure53 also audits the apps and infrastructure. In 2024 it reported 31 findings, four of them high severity and none critical (Cure53 2024). In 2025 it found 27 issues in the apps, again with no critical ones. NordVPN fixed the high-severity flaws and Cure53 verified the fixes (Cure53 2025, TechRadar). One type of flaw, a VPN bypass via direct access to a top-level domain, did appear in both years.

Incidents

In March 2018, an attacker accessed one rented server in Finland through an insecure remote management system left by the data center. NordVPN only disclosed the breach in October 2019, saying it had learned of it a few months earlier, and was criticized for the delay (TechCrunch). According to the company, users’ encrypted traffic on other servers was not at risk. In January 2026, a hacker claimed on a forum to have obtained data from a NordVPN development server. The company denied it, saying the data came from a third party’s test environment with dummy data (SecurityWeek).

09Extra features

Obfuscated servers and NordWhisper help on hotel and office networks and in countries that block VPNs. Since May 2026, obfuscated servers have run on NordWhisper instead of OpenVPN (help center).

Double VPN sends your traffic through two servers and encrypts it twice. It only works with OpenVPN, and NordVPN does not recommend it for everyday use because it slows the connection considerably. Onion Over VPN connects you to the Tor network without the Tor Browser, but it only has five servers (help center, NordVPN API).

Meshnet links your devices into a private network, so you can reach your home computer while traveling, for example. NordVPN announced in August 2025 that it would shut Meshnet down, then reversed the decision in September after a user backlash (Tom’s Guide, help center).

A dedicated IP helps when your bank or work systems flag shared VPN addresses. NordVPN offers one in 31 locations. You can use it on up to 10 devices over OpenVPN but only one over NordLynx, and setup can take up to three business days (help center, help center).

Dark Web Monitor alerts you when your email shows up in a leaked database. Basic covers up to 5 email addresses; Complete and Ultra add phone numbers and payment cards (help center). SmartPlay is switched on in every app and helps you access streaming services, with nothing to set up (help center). Since October 2026, Complete and Ultra also filter scam texts on iPhone (help center).

10Apps and devices

One subscription covers 10 devices at once (help center). NordVPN has apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad, Android, Linux, Apple TV, Android TV and Fire TV, plus extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge (help center). Since 2025, Linux also has a graphical app with open-source code (help center). For Samsung TVs, Roku, Chromecast or game consoles, you set up the VPN on your router or share the connection from a computer (help center). Users rate the app highly: 4.66 out of 5 from more than 700,000 ratings in the US App Store (App Store), and more than 100 million downloads on Google Play. The apps are available in up to 13 languages, depending on the platform (help center). Support is available around the clock by live chat, starting with an AI assistant, and by email, but not by phone (help center).

11Streaming and Netflix

NordVPN does well with streaming. In its review updated in October 2026, TechRadar unblocked Netflix in the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Japan, as well as Disney+ and BBC iPlayer; only YouTube US and Prime Video Australia failed (TechRadar). Tom’s Guide found the same in its March 2026 retest (Tom’s Guide).

With Netflix, keep its own rules in mind. According to Netflix’s help center, over a VPN you only see titles it holds global rights for, and VPNs are not supported at all on ad-supported plans (Netflix). If you travel within the EU, you do not need a VPN anyway: Netflix shows you your home catalog for a limited time (Netflix).

12Travel and censorship

If you travel to China or another country that blocks VPNs, NordVPN is one of the better choices. TechRadar ranks it among the best VPNs for China based on its latest tests (TechRadar), while Tom’s Guide warns that it can be unreliable there (Tom’s Guide). NordVPN gives no guarantee and has separate instructions for China (help center). Install and test the app before you leave.

NordVPN has no servers in Russia or China, and covers India only with a virtual location of 23 servers (help center, NordVPN API).

Every major outlet ranks NordVPN among the best VPNs. TechRadar gave it full marks for features, server network, privacy and security, and docked points mainly for price (TechRadar). Tom’s Guide lists it as an Editor’s Choice (Tom’s Guide).

14NordVPN vs the competition

NordVPN is the priciest of the big names, especially after renewal. The higher price buys repeated no-logs assessments, more features for demanding users and strong tools for restrictive networks, such as NordWhisper and obfuscated servers. If you mainly want a VPN for streaming, CyberGhost will save you money. If you want the cheapest protection on public Wi-Fi for the whole household, Private Internet Access will do. Surfshark also allows unlimited devices.

16How to buy, set up and cancel NordVPN

1. Choose a plan on the NordVPN website. Only the website sells the cheapest 27-month plan, and NordVPN’s 30-day guarantee applies.
2. Review the checkout page. Make sure the tax country is correct; VAT or sales tax is added on top. You will get access to your Nord Account by email.
3. Install the app on each device and sign in with the same account. One tap connects you; leave the default NordLynx protocol on.
4. Turn on the kill switch and scam protection. On your computer, consider post-quantum encryption too.
5. If you do not want auto-renewal, switch it off right away. In your Nord Account, open Billing and cancel auto-renewal. Your plan keeps running until the end of the paid period.
