VPN free trials: What is free and when do you pay?
Trying a VPN can mean three different things: using an ongoing free plan, getting a few days without paying, or buying a subscription with the option to request a refund. The difference is whether you provide payment details, when the full charge arrives and who handles cancellation. We compare the current conditions for CyberGhost, Surfshark, NordVPN and ExpressVPN so you can choose the right route for your computer or phone.

You want to find out whether a VPN handles your video calls, feels comfortable to use and gets along with your everyday work. You do not need to start by choosing a two-year commitment. First, though, check whether the “try it” button really starts a free trial. Sometimes it leads to a normal purchase, followed by the option to ask for your money back.
At Listify, we reviewed official help pages, trial offers and billing policies on November 6, 2026. We did not activate trials, complete purchases through Czech or Slovak accounts, or request refunds. This is a comparison of documented conditions, not our own speed test. The offer shown immediately before you subscribe remains the place to confirm your eligibility and final price.
Some links in this article are affiliate links. If you buy a subscription through them, we may earn a commission. We checked the offers on November 6, 2026; confirm the price, availability, applicable taxes and renewal terms with the provider before ordering.
01Quick choice: No payment details, no upfront charge or a refund
If you do not want to provide any payment method, start with a short desktop trial or an ongoing free plan. If you want several days with a paid plan, expect that a payment method may be required and billing may start automatically. A longer money-back period usually means paying first.
| Offer type | Payment at the start | What follows | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ongoing free plan | No paid-plan purchase | Continued access within the free tier | You do not want a trial deadline |
| Genuine free trial | No subscription charge yet | Access ends or paid billing begins | You want to assess paid features |
| Money-back guarantee | You pay for the chosen plan | You must request a refund in time | You need longer and can pay upfront |
Two examples make the distinction clear. CyberGhost advertises 24 hours on Windows and macOS without payment details. Proton VPN Free is an ongoing free plan, rather than a time-limited trial of paid Plus. Its feature set therefore does not represent every paid feature.
If you want a service you will not pay for later either, see our free VPN comparison. This guide focuses on choosing and ending a temporary trial of a paid VPN.

Partner Black Friday offer for new users, checked on November 6, 2026: Proton lists €2.49 per month when paying €59.76 for the first 24 months. The subscription then automatically renews at €83.88 every 12 months unless you cancel renewal. The monthly figure is an equivalent rate, not a monthly payment. No bonus months are advertised. Check the final amount and applicable taxes at checkout. Paid VPN Plus comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee under Proton’s terms. This is neither a free trial nor the Proton Free plan.
02Genuine VPN trials compared by device
The table separates where you activate an offer from the device on which you eventually want to use the VPN. An offer started on a phone may be billed differently from a subscription purchased on the website. You also cannot assume that one platform’s trial length applies to another.
| Service and activation | Duration | Payment method | When it ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| CyberGhost, website: Windows/macOS | 24 hours | Not required | Trial expires automatically |
| CyberGhost, Google Play | 3 days | Required | Paid continuation unless cancelled |
| CyberGhost, App Store | 7 days | Required | Paid continuation unless cancelled |
| Surfshark, website: eligible longer plans | 7 days | Card, PayPal or Apple Pay | Chosen plan is charged |
| NordVPN, Google Play | 3 days | As shown by Google Play | Paid continuation unless cancelled |
| NordVPN, website: selected countries | 7 days | Card or PayPal | Chosen plan is charged |
| ExpressVPN, App Store / Google Play | 3 days | Required | Paid continuation unless cancelled |
Table sources: CyberGhost trial, Surfshark for Windows, NordVPN trial, NordVPN for Android and ExpressVPN trial. This is not a ranking of service quality.
Choose around the task. A day may be enough to check whether an app connects on your laptop. Working across several networks or investigating recurring disconnections calls for longer. But seven days in which you never get around to trying the service will tell you nothing about it.
03What to check with each provider
CyberGhost: A short computer trial without payment details
The desktop trial expires without cancellation. Mobile versions work differently: you activate them through the relevant store and need to watch the subscription’s continuation. On iOS, CyberGhost explicitly advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends. See its platform-specific trial page.
The Android help page ties its trial to an annual subscription. On iOS, check the specific plan offered in the App Store. Read CyberGhost’s Android signup guide before activation.
We would start a short trial only when you have time to use it. Installing on Friday evening and first checking on Sunday wastes its main benefit. Prepare two or three activities you need to assess before you begin.
The button below opens a paid offer, not activation of the free trial described above. The two-year offer includes 4 extra months, totaling 28 months. The offer checked November 6, 2026 showed €61.32 for the first term, then automatic renewal at €61.32 per year; country-dependent tax may be added. The discount compares with the €11.99 monthly plan. Payment is upfront with an eligible-purchase 45-day money-back guarantee. Confirm your local checkout total.
CyberGhost: up to 82% off + 4 extra months
Surfshark: A website trial with a temporary device limit
According to Surfshark’s current help page, new users can start a website trial on 12-month and 24-month plans. During the trial, access is limited to three devices. Unlimited connections belong to the subsequent paid subscription. You manage a website trial through your Surfshark account by disabling automatic renewal.
In the checkout we opened on November 6, the trial appeared with Czechia selected and remained after changing the tax country to Slovakia. This was not a purchase from a Slovak IP address, and we did not complete activation. If your order shows a payment today and no trial period, do not treat it as a free trial. We assess the wider product in our Surfshark review.
Checked November 6, 2026. The displayed Starter and One offer is CZK 1,593 before tax for 27 months, charged after a 7-day trial. The trial is for new customers using eligible payment methods; cancel before it ends to avoid the charge. Check your final regional price, billing currency and renewal at checkout. The website trial allows up to 3 devices.
Surfshark: 3 extra months with a 2-year plan
NordVPN: Separate website and Android offers
The seven-day website trial has a defined list of countries and eligible one-year or two-year plans. Czechia and Slovakia are absent. Eligible countries include the US, UK and Germany; check the complete list before applying. The separate Android offer excludes Bangladesh, India, South Korea and Sri Lanka. We cover the brand-specific detail in our NordVPN free-trial guide.
Do not rely on the number of days in an advertisement alone. Check where the offer must be activated and who qualifies. Signing into an app with an already paid account does not itself create a new trial.
The button below opens a paid offer, not activation of the free trial described above. Offer on selected two-year plans, checked November 6, 2026. The maximum saving compares the highest-tier introductory monthly equivalent with its annual-renewal equivalent. The bonus requires keeping the subscription beyond 30 days. Confirm the full charge, tax and renewal at checkout. This is a paid subscription with an eligible-purchase 30-day money-back guarantee.
NordVPN: up to 78% off + 3 extra months
ExpressVPN: A mobile trial changes the refund route
ExpressVPN currently advertises a three-day iOS trial; its main offer lists the same duration for Android. The purchase channel is crucial: its in-app purchase guide excludes both App Store and Google Play subscriptions from ExpressVPN’s own 30-day guarantee. The relevant store decides any refund request.
Starting a trial therefore does not automatically begin a combined “trial plus a month to claim a refund” offer. Compare the subsequent charge and the refund terms of that channel before choosing. For the product itself, read our ExpressVPN review.
The button below opens a paid offer, not activation of the free trial described above. Checked November 6, 2026. Basic: 2 years + 4 months, billed US$83.72 before tax upfront for 28 months, then automatically renewed at US$99.95 a year before tax. The advertised saving uses the current monthly price of the same tier as its baseline. A 30-day money-back guarantee applies to eligible new users; this is not a no-payment trial.
04Country, plan and purchase channel all matter
The same brand may offer different arrangements on its website, on Android and on iPhone. A page translated into your language does not establish eligibility for an account in your country. Availability may depend on the store region, subscription history, chosen plan or payment method. Note those conditions before activation, particularly if you have paid for that service before.
Also distinguish Apple Pay from the App Store. Apple Pay can simply be a payment method used on a provider’s website. The App Store is a purchase channel with its own subscription management. Similarly, the option to pay with Google Pay does not establish a Google Play purchase. Your order confirmation and the place where the active subscription appears are what matter.
- Find an explicit trial duration and the amount due today.
- Check the plan that will start afterwards and the length of its billing term.
- Save the confirmation, including the date, account and subscription-management link.
- If a trial is not offered, do not treat a normal purchase with a refund guarantee as a no-payment replacement.
An overseas trial roundup is therefore only a starting point. If it describes another region or an older offer, it may not apply to your account. We recommend a clearly documented available option over a longer trial whose conditions you cannot confirm.
05What you pay afterwards: Look at the full charge
A monthly equivalent and the actual charge are different things. A free trial may be followed by payment for an entire year or two years. Your decision therefore needs four figures: the charge today, the first paid term, its full price and the renewal price after that. Add the currency and whether tax is included.
For a concrete regional example, our November 6 check of Surfshark’s pricing page and linked checkout showed Starter for 24 + 3 months at CZK 0 today, followed by CZK 1,927.53 including Czech VAT after seven days. The first term would be followed by annual renewal at the then-applicable price. We did not pay. Checkout also warned that adding phone-number masking would charge the entire subscription. Check optional extras as well; this Czech-currency example is not a quote for every country.
Here is a separate illustrative example, not an offer from a particular VPN: a plan costs €60 for a year and is advertised as €5 per month. After a seven-day trial, €60 is charged at once. If you disable renewal only after that payment, you are dealing with a paid year, rather than a single €5 month.
| Stage in the example | What happens | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Trial starts | No subscription charge yet | Exact first billing deadline |
| Trial ends without cancellation | €60 charged for a year | Whether you want that commitment |
| Next renewal disabled after payment | Future renewal stops | This does not itself refund the payment |
| Separate refund request | Refund conditions are assessed | Correct recipient and request deadline |
Do not buy a long plan just because its monthly equivalent is lowest. When trying a service, the money you need available and how easily you can end the arrangement also matter. If you would not be comfortable with the full subsequent charge, choose a different type of offer.

06How to cancel without confusing cancellation and refunds
Stopping future billing, requesting money already paid and removing the app are different actions. Start with the order confirmation. It tells you whether to open the VPN account, Apple subscriptions or Google Play. Check the correct email address too, because your phone may contain more than one account.
- Find the exact trial ending and billing dates in the confirmation or account.
- Set a reminder with time to spare and decide whether to continue.
- Cancel through the correct channel and complete every confirmation step.
- Save the cancellation confirmation and check when access will end.
- If payment has already occurred, separately check refund eligibility and submit a request if appropriate.
Apple advises cancelling a trial at least 24 hours before it ends. Google explicitly warns that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. ExpressVPN also specifies at least 24 hours’ notice for app-store subscriptions. Do not automatically leave the decision until the final evening.
Do not assume that cancelling immediately always preserves every remaining free day, either. Read the access-ending information shown for that offer before confirming. For an already paid period, disabling renewal generally concerns the next charge. We have separate detailed guides to cancelling NordVPN and cancelling ExpressVPN.
07Money-back guarantees: One brand, different conditions
A guarantee is not an unlimited entitlement for every purchase. Before paying, check whether it covers the initial subscription, the selected plan and that seller. Separate add-ons may have their own exclusions. Also distinguish the deadline for submitting a request from the time an approved refund takes to reach your account.
| Service | Eligible direct purchase | App-store purchases |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 30 days from the initial purchase | NordVPN can handle eligible Google Play refunds; Apple handles App Store |
| Surfshark | 30 days from the initial purchase | Eligible Google Play purchases included; Apple handles App Store |
| ExpressVPN | 30 days for new customers | Neither App Store nor Google Play qualifies for the provider guarantee |
| CyberGhost | 14 days on a monthly plan; 45 days on plans of 6 months or longer | App Store, Google Play and Amazon excluded from the provider guarantee |
Sources and full exclusions: NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and CyberGhost. NordVPN and Surfshark refer to the initial purchase, not automatically to a renewal. For ExpressVPN, also check its current terms of service and any conditions attached to your particular promotion.
If eligibility is unclear, resolve it before buying. After payment, retain the order number and the date you submit your request. Simply saying “I do not want to continue” may be interpreted as disabling renewal. If you want a payment refunded, say so explicitly.
08What to assess during the trial
A trial should answer your questions, rather than merely confirm that a connection button lights up. First write down three requirements, such as a reliable video call, convenient switching between networks and working access to your essential apps. Decide against those requirements even if another service has a longer feature list.
- Connection: try the VPN on the devices and networks you normally use.
- Everyday work: open essential apps, make a call and upload a file.
- Controls: check that you understand the settings and can identify an active connection.
- Interruptions: use the app’s documentation to assess what happens during a connection failure and reconnection.
- Support: find help for a specific problem and check whether the available language suits you.
- Account: check subscription management before you urgently need to cancel.
If comparing speeds for yourself, use the same network, device and a similar time of day. Record at least a baseline without the VPN and a result with your chosen server. One result is not a universal assessment of the provider. Separate problems with your own Wi-Fi from changes caused by enabling the VPN.
Our Windows and Mac VPN setup guide covers the first installation. A trial still does not replace a security audit or prove no-logs claims. Those are different questions requiring documentation, provider transparency and independent assessment.

09When to keep the service and when to end the trial
We recommend keeping a VPN if it handled your main tasks, you understand its limitations and you accept the full cost of the next period. A pleasant first impression or fear of losing a discount is not enough. If you will not use the service, a cheap long plan remains an unnecessary expense.
Ending the trial makes sense if an essential app does not work, the controls frustrate you, you cannot confirm the price or you have not had time to assess anything. An incomplete test is no reason to let paid continuation begin automatically. Assess a later purchase separately, including whether a returning customer still qualifies for a trial or guarantee.
If your aim is simply ongoing basic use without payment, return to free plans. If you are choosing protection for business access, consider accounts, permissions and device management too. A consumer VPN subscription alone does not design secure operation for your website or internal application.
10VPN free-trial FAQ
Can I try a VPN without a credit card?
Yes. CyberGhost advertises a 24-hour Windows and macOS trial without payment details. Another offer may accept PayPal instead, but can still charge you later. No credit card does not necessarily mean no payment method.
Is a 30-day guarantee the same as a month of free VPN?
No. With a guarantee, you buy the subscription first. To get your money back, you must request a refund in time and satisfy the conditions of that purchase. Disabling renewal alone does not start a refund.
Why can I not see the trial described in an article?
Your purchase channel, country, plan or account history may differ. Check the specific offer’s conditions. If the order shows a charge today and no trial, do not treat it as free activation.
Does uninstalling the VPN cancel the trial?
Do not treat uninstallation as subscription cancellation. Open the provider’s account or the subscriptions section of the store where you activated the offer, and verify cancellation there.
Can I keep using trials repeatedly?
Do not rely on it. Offers often apply only to new users and the first activation. A new email address alone does not establish a new entitlement; the provider’s conditions determine eligibility.
11What this means for your own subscription website or app
A clear subscription is also part of good product design: customers should know what they get, when they pay and where they can leave. At Listify, we address these situations when designing customer accounts, order flows and custom websites.
Are you planning a service with a trial period or simplifying an existing checkout? Send us your current customer journey and a description of the plans. We can work through the screens, reminders, payment connections and change confirmations with you. Support or refunds for a particular VPN remain with its provider or the store where you purchased it.
12Sources and verification date
We checked public sources on November 6, 2026. Trial durations and guarantees are separated by purchase channel. Our price check is limited to the Surfshark checkout described above; we completed no purchases. Confirm your own account eligibility and final offer before activation.
